Take a Trip Down Memory Lane When Back in 1995 Hits Steam Next Month
Remember all those frustrating hours that you put into the original Resident Evil games? All those times you died because the awful static camera couldn’t let you see enemies which we right in front of you? All those times when the cumbersome aiming system meant that you couldn’t hit enemies no matter how many times you fired?
Being horrified at how slowly and awkwardly your character moved? Pulling your hair out waiting for those damn door opening animations to end? Well guess what? You can now relive all those endless hours of agony and frustration with Back in 1995, a retro-style horror game inspired by the likes of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and other titles released around the time of the 5th generation of gaming.
When we last reported on the game, it was still in the early stages of development, but now it’s almost done and will be released on Steam in April, as we learn from the official site.
Judging by the trailer, creator Takaaki Ichijo has done a mighty fine job of replicating the games that he idolizes. Hell, it’s even got the cheesy voice acting that plagued so many of the games of the time intact!
From the Press Release:
Hello! I’m an indie game developer living in Tokyo.
Do you dig ‘retro graphic’ indie games? I do.
Many retro-themed games are still developed by indie studios for big publishers, which is good. However, the modern rendering techniques used in such games do not provide the unique feel of those early 8 bit and 16 bit titles.
Several years ago, I was an avid gamer who spent a long time on the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn. This was my first experience of video games.
Witnessing the first stages of the development of polygon graphics, and immersing myself in their lo-fi aesthetic was exciting.
Here in 2015, some might think it’s still too early to label those games “retro.” Yet many fans around 25-35 years of age feel something about those stylistic graphics strangely nostalgic, and appealing.
I’m trying to replicate the unique feeling of those early games. The first trailer for “Back in 1995” is an alpha version. As it develops, I’ll try to make it truly representative of those awesome oldskool graphics, sounds and effects.
Sincerely, Takaaki Ichijo
