Tony Todd Joins Freeform’s Dead of Summer

We’ve been getting bits and pieces of casting news for Freeform (formerly ABC Family)’s upcoming new series “Dead of Summer,” and this latest addition has really gotten our attention.  After all, who better to join the slasher than horror icon Tony Todd?

Todd himself posted the news on Twitter, and here’s what we know so far:  Along with Tony, the cast includes “Once Upon a Time” co-stars Elizabeth Mitchell and Elizabeth Lail, Zelda Williams (“Teen Wolf”), Alberto Frezza (“Charlie’s Angels”), Eli Goree (“The 100”), Mark Indelicato (“Ugly Betty”), Ronen Rubinstein (“Orange Is the New Black”), and Paulina Singer (“Gotham”).

Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses—and first kills. Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Every episode will be centered around one of the counselors.

Series creators/executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (“Once Upon a Time”) will direct the first episode. Production began this week in Vancouver, with ABC Signature Studios and Kitsis/Horowitz producing. Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis, and Ian Goldberg will write and executive produce the series.
