Five Reasons to Watch Scream: The Series Season Two

The Scream movie franchise debuted in 1996 and enjoyed a great deal of success. It changed the way many fans looked at the horror genre, and its unique blend of horror and comedy paved the way for a number of popular franchises since. Some have been pretty good, but most have fallen short of the bar set by the Wes Craven films. Nonetheless, there’s no doubting the large impact it had.

Almost two decades after the original Scream made its big screen debut, “Scream: The Series” became a reality. A pilot episode to be aired on MTV was confirmed in 2013, and the series debuted two years later. To say the anticipation was high is a massive understatement, and while a lot of hardcore horror fans disliked the show quite a bit, there were a lot of viewers who enjoyed the first season.

About halfway through season one, it was announced there would be a season two. It was met with mixed reactions just like the first season itself, but in the end, fans of the series will get their first look at the second round of Lakewood Murders May 30th. There are several reasons to be excited, and here are five that come to mind!

1. Season One Didn’t Provide Full Closure

The first season ended with Audrey burning letters addressed to her by Piper, and it was also brought to everyone’s attention she had some papers on Brandon James that were stolen from the Lakewood County Municipal Building a year or so before the murders. While there was no confirmation of two killers, someone else definitely wore the mask and played the part when Will and Piper were in the abandoned building in Episode 1.06.

Was Audrey partners with Piper the entire time, and if so, did she kill anyone? There’s also the chance Audrey was simply friends with Piper to try and find out more details on the case, and burning the letters would eliminate any suspicion moving forward. Either way, it’s the top question going into season two. We’ll all find out soon enough, but until then, let the numerous theories begin!

2. There Are Still a lot of Familiar Faces in the Mix

Audrey has already been mentioned, but she’s just one of many main characters from season one who will be back at least for the start of the second season. The lead character will once again be Emma, and you can bet she’ll be back in the center of all the slashing. Her on-and-off boyfriend Kieran will also be making his return. He was thought by many to be the killer on more than one occasion, and who knows, those rumors may have some truth before all is said and done.

Other returning characters include Emma’s mom, Maggie, who narrowly escaped death at the hands of Piper in the season one series finale. A number of Emma’s friends also return, and that list includes Noah, Brooke, and Jake.

It was a surprise to many that several main characters survived to see another season, but it gives viewers a head start of sorts going into the next chapter. Fans won’t have to learn an entirely new cast this season, although it’s probable many of the new characters will be interesting in their own right. A little old and new worked well for the movies so why not?

3. New Season Equals More Gruesome Death Scenes

Who can forget the SAW-like way Will died at the end of Episode 1.07? If you forgot, go back and watch it as it’s one of the coolest horror deaths in recent memory. How about the way Sheriff Hudson’s life ended in the series finale? It was extremely gruesome and creative at the same time.

Fans of the Scream franchise have witnessed several awesome death scenes through the years, and there will surely be plenty more to come in season two of “Scream: The Series.” It’s been a staple of the franchise and one the directors have never taken lightly. Season one only had a couple truly memorable death scenes, but you can expect things to go to another level when the action resumes next month.

4. New Season Also Equals More Horror Movie/TV References

One of the neat things about the Scream movie franchise that “Scream: The Series” continued in season one was the numerous horror movie/television references of the past. Randy was the go-to character for this in the movies, while Noah carried on the tradition in the TV series. Some of the notables mentioned last season include Will Graham of “Hannibal” fame along with nuggets from a number of horror movies including The Exorcism, The Faculty, etc. For those keeping score, there were plenty of “Game of Thrones” references as well.

In addition, the series also did a lot of things that its movie predecessors started nearly two decades ago. From the opening scene in Episode 1.01 to the wild teenage party in the final episode, there was a lot of respect paid to the Scream franchise. Huge fans of the franchise, including myself, appreciated all of those nuggets along the way. A decent amount of the fan base loves the horror genre. When it comes to past references, the more the merrier moving forward!

5. Predicting the Killer(s) Is Always the Best Part

Let’s be honest; half the fun in the movie franchise was trying to tie up all the loose ends and predict the killer. How many of you are guilty of thinking Billy Loomis was definitely the killer in Scream, only to feel completely fooled after his fake death? Then, everyone was thrown for another loop when he shot Randy and admitted to using corn syrup to fake everything. That was great! That was a staple in the first movie along with the sequels and first season of the TV series.

The Lakewood slasher (Piper, if you’re living under a rock) from season one was admittedly a little too predictable the last few episodes, but before she became overly involved, the list of possible killers was fairly lengthy. Will and Jake got the Billy and Stu treatment from a number of fans, and even Noah and Audrey were mentioned at times.

Lastly, is the infamous original Lakewood slasher Brandon James truly dead? His name has already come up along with Audrey as possible killers for season two. The killer or killers in Scream 2, Scream 3, and Scream 4 weren’t seen in the previous films, so there’s a good chance we haven’t seen the new Ghostface up to this point.

The first season’s ending closely resembled Scream 3, which also happens to be my least favorite of the four movies. Here’s hoping they go the Scream, Scream 2, Scream 4, or a completely new and fresh route in season two. Either way, the viewers are going to have a hell of a time playing detective in hopes of being the one who guessed things correctly from the start.

Season 1 of “Scream: The TV Series” arrives on DVD on May 10th.
