Director Gareth Edwards Departs Godzilla 2
While we wait for Toho’s Godzilla Resurgence, coming later this year, the 2014 American reboot of the franchise is soon getting a sequel of its own. Earlier this week, Legendary gave the Kaiju flick a March 22, 2019 release date, nearly a year later than originally expected, and now some more bad news has taken a bite out of the Big G.
Deadline reports that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will no longer be directing Godzilla 2, and the site notes that the split was an amicable one for Legendary, Warner Bros. and the director. Edwards recently wrapped production on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and he’s keen on next focusing on smaller projects.
Max Borenstein wrote the current version of Godzilla 2.
Legendary and Warner Bros are now looking for a director to replace Edwards as they also work on the epic mash-up film Godzilla vs. Kong, set for release on May 20, 2020.
