We’re pretty intrigued by SundanceTV’s upcoming “Cleverman” series, which debuts on June 1st; and if you are too, we have a sneak peek of Episode 1.01 to share along with a new trailer, some video extras, and a pretty huge image gallery.
“Cleverman” is based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen: One young man – The Cleverman – struggles with his own power and the responsibility to unite a divided world, but he must first overcome a deep estrangement from his older brother. Michael Miller is script producer, and writers are Michael Miller and Jon Bell.
“Cleverman” features a superb ensemble cast led by Scottish actor Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”), Golden Globe nominee Frances O’Connor (“The Missing”), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Sapphires), Rob Collins (The Lion King), and Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games).
Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Septembers of Shiraz) is lead director, with acclaimed director, writer, actress, and performer Leah Purcell also directing.
Set in the near future, “Cleverman” is a smart, sexy, and startlingly original drama that sees a group of non-humans battling for survival in a world where humans feel increasingly inferior to them and want to silence, exploit, and kill them. Central to the drama is the story of two estranged Indigenous brothers who are forced together to fight for their own survival. Otherworldly creatures also emerge into this fragile and dangerous place in this action-packed new series.
Producers are Rosemary Blight and Lauren Edwards for Goalpost Pictures, Ryan Griffen, and Angela Littlejohn for Pukeko Pictures, with executive producers Sally Riley, Kylie du Fresne, Ben Grant, Martin Baynton, Adam Fratto, Jan David Frouman, and Amelie Kienlin.
“Cleverman” Episode 1.01 (airs 6/1/16; 10-11 pm)
A series of unexplained violent attacks in the city are blamed on the newly discovered “Hairypeople,”who have been living and passing amongst us, without our knowledge.
