Roland Emmerich Reveals Original Independence Day Sequel Concept

We’re just over one week away from the release of Independence Day: Resurgence, and you may be asking yourself why the hell it took so long for the 1996 film to spawn a sequel – it was, after all, the highest grossing film of that year. Well, a sequel was actually planned many years ago; it just never got off the ground.

Speaking with Empire, director Roland Emmerich spilled the beans on the unmade follow-up.

It was after 9/11 and [producer] Dean Devlin and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn’t work,” Emmerich shared with Empire. “There’s still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that.”

We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say ‘we come in peace’ and that was it,” he continued. “It was just too weak an idea, and we didn’t really want to do it.”

So, will there be a sequel to Resurgence? There’s a good chance.

If it’s successful enough, yes [there’ll be a third movie], because it’s set up for a sequel,” Emmerich revealed.

Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Angelababy, William Fichtner, and Sela Ward all star in Independence Day: Resurgence.

Look for the film to hit theaters everywhere June 24, 2016.
