Broom-Hilda FINALLY Flying to the Big Screen
Growing up, there were few pleasures greater than reading the Sunday comics! One of my childhood staples, Broom-Hilda, has managed to entertain me well into my adult years. I can honestly say that even decades later, this green-skinned lady of the dark makes me smile from ear-to-ear.
With witches being a hot topic as of late, it was only a matter of time before someone in Hollyweird took notice of the broom-riding babe (try calling her anything less, and watch what happens); and Deadline is reporting that Broom-Hilda, the 1,500-year-old, man-crazy witch with an attitude and a weight problem born out of the popular 1970 comic strip from Russell Myers, has just been picked up by producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg. The two secured the IP from the strip’s syndicator, Chicago-based Tribune Content Agency.
Adler and Rosenberg are looking to capitalize on the IP in every “witch” way they can. “Russell Myers has been entertaining audiences for years. We’re excited to bring this to the big screen. We plan to create a franchise and leverage the IP across film, television, and digital media,” said Rosenberg, who previously worked at Empire Entertainment producing commercials before meeting Adler.
“Our intention is to make it into a movie that might have a number 2 and number 3 behind it as well,” said Adler, who was the force behind HBO’s “Tales from the Crypt,” which was also based on a comic strip and spawned two movies for Universal. “Tales From The Crypt” was a major success running for 93 episodes over nine years. Adler also produced the films Valkyrie, Superman Returns, Starksy and Hutch, Ghost Ship, and Constantine.
