Perhaps the single most must-attend event at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was tonight’s first-ever screening of director Adam Wingard’s The Woods, but even we had no idea how much of a mind-blowing experience the big premiere would be. Because as it turns out, the film was a top secret sequel all along!

News just came out of Comic-Con that the real title of The Woods is Blair Witch (review), and we must take a moment to tip our hats to Jonathan Barkan over on Bloody Disgusting for decoding the big secret back in April of last year. Barkan, scooped by an insider, speculated that there was a Blair Witch connection, and he was right on the money.

The film, which sounded quite familiar right off the bat, is set in Burkittsville, Maryland, and centers on a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone. As it turns out, one of them is the brother of Heather Donahue, and he’s on the hunt for the sister who went missing back in 1999.

Watch the new trailer below!

Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, Blair Witch stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson. Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge, The Strangers, It), Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Keith Calder, and Jessica Wu (You’re Next, The Guest) produce.
