Scary Mermaid Thriller The Deep Greenlit by Freeform
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Self, one thing we just don’t have enough of is scary stories about mermaids“? Well, your wish is about to come true because Freeform has greenlit “The Deep,” and we have all the early details for you right here!
Per TVLine, today Freeform officially announced a pick-up for “The Deep,” a pilot about the impending battle between mer-folk and surface dwellers. Production begins in Vancouver, British Columbia, this September.
Set in the coastal town of Bristol Cove — known for once allegedly being home to mermaids — the series ignites a “battle between man and sea” as “predatory beings return to reclaim their right to the ocean.”
“’The Deep’ is a very different show than one would expect when they hear the word ‘mermaid,’” says Karey Burke, executive vice president of Programming and Development. “The mermaid tale has been reinvented in this pilot. The writing is thrilling, stories complex and scary, and we are excited to explore the themes of obsession and violence through these amazing creatures.”
Brad Luff, Nate Hopper, and R.D. Robb will executive produce “The Deep” along with writers Eric Wald and Dean White and director Scott Stewart (“Dominion,” Dark Skies, Legion). Emily Whitesell (“Finding Carter”) is on board as showrunner.
Synopsis:
In the mermaid-obsessed sea town of Bristol Cove, everyone’s lives will change when actual mermaids come ashore, causing sides to be taken, loyalties to be tested, and a war between man and mermaid to begin.
