Tom Felton Going from Potter Franchise to Planet of the ApesTom Felton, who is best known as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, has signed on to the latest chapter in the Planet of the Apes series, Rise of the Apes, playing Brian Cox’s son.

According to Variety Felton is the latest addition to a pretty strong cast that includes Cox as the heartless owner of a primate sanctuary, Andy Serkis, James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow.

Felton’s portrayal of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince won him the MTV Movie Award for “Best Villain” so it’ll be interesting to see if this new part keeps him on the villainous path or takes him down another road.

Set in San Francisco, Rise of the Apes revolves around man’s experiments with genetic engineering that lead to a dramatic increase in the intelligence of apes and the onset of war for supremacy. Rupert Wyatt is directing from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

The film begins production this month and is scheduled for release on June 24, 2011.
