See How The Asylum is Dicking Around with Herman Melville’s Moby Dick
I hadn’t intended to write another article about The Asylum’s forthcoming take on Moby Dick so soon after an article mentioning it along with several other upcoming Asylum genre offerings, but since they’ve now put out artwork and some production stills and other sites have picked up on it, might as well…
The Asylum’s updated take on Herman Melville’s classic tale of obsession, revenge, and whaling sees the captain of a high-tech submarine on an obsessive quest to destroy the enormous prehistoric whale that maimed him. Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, MegaForce) and Renee O’Connor (aka Xena’s sidekick Gabrielle) star.
It cannot be coincidence that The Asylum chose to get into the giant prehistoric killer whale business so soon after archaeologists discovered fossils of a species of prehistoric whale so ginormous they gave it the scientific name “Leviathan melvillei” after both the biblical monster Leviathan and the author of the most famous whaling novel of all time.
The DVD artwork appears to indicate this great whale won’t be white and again reminds us how the original Jaws poster may very well be the single most influential movie poster of all time.
2010: Moby Dick is the ungainly title The Asylum has given the film. I assume they chose not to follow in the footsteps of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and Mega Piranha by titling their film Mega Dick out of fear it be confused for a porno.
2010: Moby Dick releases on November 23rd. That means the film’s title will be completely outdated barely a month out from its release. Does anyone at The Asylum consider such things when making these decisions?
Below you’ll find a few publicity stills of Barry Bostwick looking all Ahab-y, Renee O’Connor looking barely recognizable, and some black seaman in a pink sweater challenging the Navy’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
