As we told you on Monday, this month we’ll be highlighting several of the “Best Books of the Halloween Season” to keep you apprised of all the latest horror literary offerings heading our way; and today we’re shining a light on Level Grind, an omnibus of the first four books in Annie Bellet’s The Twenty-Sided Sorceress series.

Included are Justice Calling, Murder of Crows, Pack of Lies, and Hunting Season.  The compilation was just released October 4th and is available now from Saga Press.

Synopsis:
Gamer. Nerd. Sorceress.

Jade Crow lives a quiet life running her comic book and game store in Wylde, Idaho, hiding from a powerful sorcerer who wants to eat her heart and take her powers—her ex-boyfriend, Samir. Yet, when dark powers threaten her friends’ lives, Jade must save them by using magic. But as soon as she does, her nemesis will find her and she won’t be able to stand up against him when he comes.

Justice Calling introduces Jade Crow, her loyal and nerdy friends, and her magical and mundane worlds. Jade is hiding in plain sight until a shapeshifting Justice arrives in town with grim news and stern accusations. Jade must awaken the dormant magic within her to save her friends.

Murder of Crows returns Jade to the Native American home and family of her childhood, where she uncovers terrible and deadly secrets and learns hard truths about her own bloodline. Deceit, fear, and evil spirits must be overcome.

Pack of Lies throws Jade and her friends into the power struggle of the wolf packs after the leader of all the dens, Alpha of the Alphas, dies mysteriously. The wolf shapeshifters and the other members of the magical community around the town and mystical woods of Wylde, Idaho, do not know whether they can trust the now revealed sorceress.

In Hunting Season, Jade is now the prey. Having used her magic to thwart evil spirits, were creatures, warlocks, and witches, Jade’s power is fully revealed. Her ex-lover and mentor, the sorcerer Samir, senses her presence and sends his new apprentice to collect Jade’s living heart as she battles to save the forest itself from an ancient curse.

Part “Buffy,” “Charmed,” and Harry Potter, a dollop or two of Dungeons & Dragons, a twinkling of Twilight, and a good dose of Dresden Files with Star Wars, superhero, and Warcraft references thrown into the snappy dialogue, Level Grind is a fun and fast-paced read where you’ll laugh and be enthralled by the action, the characters, and Bellet’s crisp storytelling.
