In the most “Really?” story of the day, Deadline is reporting that MTV is developing “War of the Worlds,” a contemporary drama series based on H. G. Wells’ classic alien invasion novel.

The adaptation will be written by former “Teen Wolf” writer Andrew Cochran and executive produced by the hit MTV series’ creator/executive producer Jeff Davis as well as The Firm’s Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinetz.

Mounting a new series take on Wells’ 1898 book has been a passion project for The Firm partner Barry, whose grandfather Gene Barry was the star of the first War of the Worlds screen adaptation, the 1953 Paramount movie directed by Byron Haskin.

Overall, there have been about a dozen film and TV adaptations of the book, most recently the 2005 Paramount movie directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise.

The novel shot up in popularity following the famous Orson Welles 1938 radio adaptation, which presented the story as a series of fake news bulletins reporting of an actual Martian invasion in progress, which caused panic among listeners.
