NYCC 2010: Halo-8 Forms Partnership with Graphic.ly for Digital Comics
More news coming out of the New York Comic Con, this time involving comic/illustrated film pioneers Halo-8, who are joining forces with Graphic.ly Inc. for digital distribution of Halo-8’s comic books. If you’re at the Con and want to learn more, you can stop by Graphic.ly’s booth, where Halo-8’s Matt Pizzolo and actress Nicki Clyne are appearing on Saturday, October 9th.
For the rest of us, here are the details:
Content will be delivered on Graphic.ly’s iPad/iPod app, desktop app, and forthcoming Android and WinMo7 apps, beginning with the recent sci-fi series Godkiller: Walk Among Us (print versions of which are currently sold out) and the upcoming giallo-horror The Long Knives.
The Long Knives is a dark tale of revenge about an awol black ops team and the resilient young girl they should not have abducted. Written by Matt Pizzolo and illustrated by newcomer Ana Ludeshka, The Long Knives takes place in the near future when a viral pandemic has crippled law enforcement. Amid the looting and lawlessness, a murderous gang of awol black ops are abducting children… but no one knows why. When 16 year old Bird winds up in their clutches, she’ll uncover a dark conspiracy with terrifying consequences. Pizzolo and Ludeshka merged the story’s gritty realism with a Tim Burton-esque otherworldy visual style and giallo-horror aesthetic for a uniquely realized horror adventure.
With the iPad now boasting a status of fastest-selling electronic device ever, digital comics are gaining momentum – in fact, ICv2 estimates digital comics sales have grown ten-fold from 2009 to 2010. Godkiller will be Halo-8’s first comic book released digitally. In similar fashion, the Godkiller illustrated film was Halo-8’s first feature film to debut digitally prior to its DVD release (distributed On Demand to 75 million homes via cable operators including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS and digital providers Xbox, Playstation3, iTunes).
Godkiller: Walk Among Us is the epic story of a boy on a quest to save his dying sister. Written by Matt Pizzolo and illustrated by Anna Muckcracker (Lucid), Godkiller takes place in a dark-future after economic collapse, after nuclear holy war, and after Earth is colonized by alien races. Tommy and his kid sister Lucy live in an orphanage in one of the few remaining city-states, but Lucy is critically ill and desperately in need of a new heart. Tommy’s odyssey to find a new heart for his sister begins when he follows an organ-stealing prostitute named Halfpipe out of the city-state and into the savage borderland known as Outer City.
“Graphic.ly is uniquely forward-thinking in their development of the digital comics space–they’re cultivating a real socially networked community and they’re not afraid to integrate comics with other digital media like audio commentaries,” said Pizzolo. “Since we at Halo-8 focus on telling our stories with transmedia innovation, this partnership is a hugely exciting new opportunity.”
“Halo-8 represents exactly the type of publishers we created Graphic.ly for, by taking comics to the next level we’re excited to see the kinds of exciting evolution of comics that Halo-8 can deliver to the Graphic.ly community,” said Micah Baldwin, CEO of Graphic.ly.
