Chinese Megablockbuster Monster Hunt Getting a Sequel; First Trailer Released
At this rate, China may overtake the US and become the most profitable market in the world when it comes to box office earnings. Just last month for instance, Doctor Strange joined a long list of Hollywood movies to have grossed over $100 million in the region.
It’s not all imports though, as they’ve also got some domestic productions that get in on the big bucks. Such as Monster Hunt, which earned $385,284,817 when it was released last year. This made it the highest grossing Chinese film of all time until the release of The Mermaid. And while it went largely unnoticed in its limited run in US theaters, it’s now became such a huge part of Chinese culture that it’s getting a sequel. Which is probably the least surprising news you’ll read all day.
Judging from the trailer and poster below, Monster Hunt 2 will continue the story of Wuba, the baby heir to the Monster Realm. It’s now filming in Beijing, with Raman Hui directing. Bai Baihe, Jing Boran and Tony Leung Chiu-wai star, and it’s set to be released in China in 2018. I advise distributors not to release their movies in China on the same month as this.
