So Just Why Did The Wolfman Fail? Director Joe Johnston Speaks Up!

While it wasn’t the worst thing we’ve ever seen, Joe Johnston’s remake of The Wolfman certainly did nothing to live up to any expectations. So what went wrong? Let’s hear from the man himself …

In an interview with Comic Book Movie in promotion of Captain America, Johnston shed some really honest light on the subject.

“CAPTAIN AMERICA was a lot of things. Every picture has its highs and lows, its dreads and excited anticipations. To fully understand the CAPTAIN AMERICA experience, I have to keep reminding myself that I had just come off another film I shot in the UK, THE WOLFMAN,” Johnston tells the site.

The two experiences could not have been more different, in fact in many ways (certainly not all) they were polar opposites. I had three weeks of prep on WOLFMAN, a ridiculously inadequate amount of time to try to bring together the fractured and scattered pieces of the production. I had taken the job mostly because I had a cash flow problem, the only time in my career I’ve ever let finances enter into the decision process. Money is always the wrong reason for doing something that requires passionate devotion. The production was a leaky, rudderless ship in a perfect storm suffering from bad decisions, infighting, reluctance of the powers-that-be to take responsibility, and too many under-qualified cooks in the kitchen. The good news and bad news about directing is that when the picture works you’re showered with all the credit and when it doesn’t work you’re dumped on with all the blame. Both scenarios are undeserved. I take full responsibility for THE WOLFMAN not working because it goes with the territory.”

It’s amazing how a little bit of honesty can feel so refreshing.

Development Hell: The Unmade Horror Movie Podcast
Cary Fukanaga's IT (with Emily Gagne)
The Development Hell podcast revisits their episode on Cary Fukunaga’s (TRUE DETECTIVE) unmade adaptation of Stephen King’s IT! With guest Emily Gagne, this episode uncovered a very different (and darker) vision of Stephen King’s seminal work of terror. Emily Gagne is a filmmaker, podcaster and writer. She curates FINAL GIRL FASHION on Instagram, an account showcasing the killer outfits of women in horror. Emily also co-hosts the podcasts We Really Like Her! And What About Meryll? Together they cover the IT miniseries, both feature films and the classic Stephen King novel which started it all. That’s when they dive into Cary Fukunaga’s and Chase Palmer's 2014 draft of the IT adaptation which was ultimately cancelled. Furthermore, they explore the nitty-gritty differences between the Andy Muschietti vision of Derry and how it compares to the Fukanga/Chase draft.Emily and Josh also speculate wildly about why Warner Brothers jumped ship after developing IT with Fukanga for nearly five years. If you are a fan of Stephen King’s IT and Pennywise the Dancing Clown? If so, you won't want to miss this episode. Do you think the recent films did the book justice?
