Netflix’s Castlevania Series Gets a Fittingly Grim Poster

Earlier this month it was announced that Netflix had locked down a “Castlevania” animated series that would be executive produced by Adi Shankar (The Grey, Dredd). Now, Shankar has released the first poster for the series, and it clearly pays homage to the game series the show is based on.

The poster shows Dracula’s Castle in red and black, the various spires seemingly hanging against gravity while bats circle the surreal, Gothic structure. If this is where the series will take place and the visual style that they’re going for, I’m even more excited than I was before! As a child who grew up playing the Castlevania games pretty regularly (Simon’s Quest was my jam), this series is a long time coming; and I can’t wait to see what they do with it!

Shankar recently spoke with us about the upcoming series, saying: “I’m a gamer. I’m a comic book guy and I’m a video game guy. It’s amazing to see all of the comic book tales beyond just origin stories get treated with respect. Video game adaptations are where comic book adaptations were in the mid-Eighties. We still need our Blade moment, our X-Men moment, our Spider-Man, and then our Avengers moment. ‘Castlevania’ will be the best video game adaptation to date.

“Castlevania” Season 1, Part 1 will be coming to Netflix in 2017!

Inspired by the classic video game series, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar.
