Exclusive: Danny Trejo, Luke Goss and Roel Reiné Talk Death Race 2
It’s no secret I love action flicks and any project featuring Jason Statham is like catnip for me, which is why I loved the balls-out Paul W.S. Anderson remake Death Race when it hit theaters in 2008. And even though many love to hate on it because it was a remake of a cult classic, there’s no denying that there was something pretty badass about Statham’s character, Frankenstein.
Universal Pictures must have agreed as they put together one of the best direct-to-DVD action films I’ve ever experienced with Death Race 2, which hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves this week. Directed by Roel Reiné, Death Race 2 stars Luke Goss (Hellboy 2), Danny Trejo (Machete), Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead remake), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Tanit Phoenix (Lost Boys: The Thirst), and Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat).
Recently, Dread Central’s own Heather Wixson and Brian Smith had the opportunity to catch up with director Reiné and stars Goss and Trejo to talk about their experiences making the sequel/prequel as well as the future of the Death Race franchise and that if all goes well, fans may be enjoying more of Frankenstein’s exploits on the Death Race track in the near future.
Watch our video interviews below, and make sure to check out Death Race 2 (Blu-ray review here) when it’s released this Tuesday!
Synopsis
Death Race 2 takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. To contain the growing criminal population, a vast network of for-profit, private prisons springs up, creating a lawless subculture ruled by gangs, cold-blooded killers and sociopaths. The worst of these prisons is Terminal Island, where inmates fight each other in a highly rated televised death match, where there are no rules, and the winner is the one who survives the gladiator-style, no-holds-barred competition. Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas (Luke Goss) arrives on the Island to serve his life sentence just as ruthlessly ambitious television personality September Jones evolves the death match into the ultimate reality show – Death Race. A brutal prison yard demolition derby that pits prisoners against each other in steel reinforced, heavily armed vehicles, Death Race offers the winner the ultimate prize: freedom — if he can survive to enjoy it.
