Akira Kurosawa’s Masque of the Red Death Script to be Filmed

Often regarded as the Godfather of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa sadly died before he could film his planned adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. You probably know that story from Roger Corman’s classic 1964 adaptation starring Vincent Price.

The Oscar nominated Kurosawa was known for films such as Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood and Ran, and was a frequent collaborator with Godzilla creator Ishirō Honda.

The good news is that Chinese studio Huayi Brothers Media have purchased Kurosawa’s script, and are planning to make it into a film by 2020, as reported by China.org. Chen Kuo-fu’s CKF Pictures will be collaborating on the project. A director has not yet come onboard.

This isn’t the first time that one of Kurosawa’s scripts was adapted after his death. The films After the Rain, The Sea is Watching, and this year’s PS4 classic Nioh were all based on screenplays that he never got the chance to film. If you head over the The Film Stage, you can read a translation of his Masque of the Red Death script in its entirety.
