Netflix has announced that they have ordered a 10-episode series based on Shirley Jackson’s horror drama The Haunting of Hill House, which will be written, produced, and directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush, Gerald’s Game). It will also be produced by Amblin TV and Paramount TV, according to Deadline. Flanagan will be reteaming with his producing partner Trevor Macy.

The Haunting of Hill House has been adapted into two feature-length films, one in 1963 and one in 1999. Both were simply titled The Haunting. This new series will apparently be a modern re-imagining of the story.

In The Haunting of Hill House, “…four seekers arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
