Still Interested in a TV Series of The Dark Tower? Good Because It’s Happening (Maybe)!

When it was announced that Stephen King’s epic series The Dark Tower was going to be adapted into live action properties, one medium that was included was TV. For many, this was a great bit of news as a TV series has the ability to really flesh out a story over many episodes, something a 2- to 3-hour film simply can’t do.

However, since that announcement, there hasn’t been too much in the way of information on that front, and the film has since been delayed more than once.

However, producer Ron Howard is adamant that the TV aspect is still very much in the plans, telling TVGuide, “Dark Tower is coming out this summer. It’s a terrific movie directed by Nikolaj Arcel. And we are working on the television component. He continues, explaining, “That’s not a commitment on the television side, but creatively it could work very well hand-in-hand with what we’d like the movies to be.

Now, as you’ll notice, Howard said “movies.” The plan is that if the first film is a success, more will follow. Considering the rich and expansive universe that King has created, there is certainly a lot to pull from. However, if the film isn’t a success, which is unfortunately a very real possibility (high fantasy films typically don’t fare all that well at the box office), they may have to shelve all the plans until they figure out the best approach to take.

Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, Tom Taylor, and Katheryn Winnick co-star in The Dark Tower.

Based on the King-penned fantasy series, the film follows a wandering knight who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis, the Man in Black.

Nikolaj Arcel directs with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing under their Imagine Entertainment banner along with Stephen King and Erica Huggins. The current release date is August 4, 2017.
