Sony Picks Up Ryan Gregory Phillips’ Shortwave for Distribution
The sci-fi horror/thriller Shortwave is a film that we’ve been lauding on Dread Central for quite a while. Having gone through the festival circuit, many have been wondering what the film’s next step would be. Turns out Sony Pictures and Vegas Baby Releasing have elected to pick up the film and are planning a theatrical, streaming, and VOD release, according to AITH.
The film is writer/editor Ryan Gregory Phillips’ directorial debut and has won multiple awards.
Shortwave (review) has close to 20 film fests under its belt, wracking up several awards in the process, including Best Feature and Best Cinematography at the NOLA Horror Film Fest.
Shortwave was produced by Tony Mancilla and Lindsay Lanzillotta (two of the producers of Sitges winner The Invitation) and director/writer/editor Phillips. It stars Chilean actors Juanita Ringeling and Cristobal Tapia Montt as well as Kyle Davis and features Jay Ellis, Nina Senicar, and Sara Malakul Lane.
If you are not familiar with shortwave radios or the stories around them, many believe the signals broadcast by them could be from space or perhaps even a different time or dimension.
Synopsis:
Josh and Isabel Harris, after suffering the loss of their only child, relocate to a secluded hillside research facility with the hopes of repairing their broken family. After years of trying, Josh and his research partner, Thomas, have a breakthrough involving a cryptic shortwave radio signal and its universal origins. Something within the signal resonates with Isabel, and she begins experiencing hallucinations and visions of distant memories. Upon further investigation into the phenomenon, the scientists fear for Isabel’s health while Isabel fears the signal has attracted something sinister to their new home.
