If you didn’t know, this week marks the 37th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (and the 40th anniversary of the novel’s release), although the acclaimed horror author is notorious for not sharing that opinion! Still, while he may not enjoy it, I absolutely adore that film and love that this week has been seeing so many people online share in that sentiment.

Enter Boston, MA metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, who today have released a new single by the name of “Enjoy Your Slay”, which is inspired directly by The Shining to the point that it even features Sam Kubrick, the grandson of Stanley Kubrick!

The band told our pal Jerry Smith, who relayed it to us, the following:

With every song on the last album being inspired by a famous novel, it wasn’t long after it’s release before fans began requesting us to create more music based on literature. When it came time to choose which book would be the basis for the final chapter of our album cycle, we decided to put the choice in the hands of our fans by having them vote between the two most requested novels, ‘The Shining’ and ‘Psycho.’

It was a close race, but Stephen King’s classic tale of the Overlook Hotel’s winter caretaker and his descent into madness emerged as the victor. Being huge fans of not only the novel but also of Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant film adaptation, we knew in order for the song to work we would need to capture the unnerving isolation and traumatizing scenes of horror that occurred on those 447 pages and 144 minutes of film.

As a special treat for fans of the story, we were able to secure an unbelievable guest vocal appearance on the track by none other than Sam Kubrick, Stanley Kubrick’s grandson. On our tour of the U.K. last fall, we became great friends with his band Shields, whose technical prowess and dynamic songwriting blew us away. Being a big fan of their band and Sam’s vocals, we knew his inclusion on the song would provide a strong connection to the story’s legacy. His performance undeniably adds a layer and depth to the composition that is truly chill inducing.

Below is a stream of the new song as well as the lyrics. Give it a listen and enjoy your slay, er…stay!

You can buy the single via iTunes.

Lyrics:

Plagued by the past and down a badly beaten path
Lies a place, one of a kind
Cursed by a blinding light that no one can outshine

A mess of a man, his fate unknown
One drink away from a broken home
He can’t give up but can’t go on like this
A five year old longs to be free
From visions he can’t help but see
And a mother who can’t understand

That the writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
Oh can’t you see that you’re just rats within my halls
To hell with hospitality (and we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much enjoy your slay

Face down in the lap luxury
Fuck the comforts of reality
Turn the page, disengage and destroy
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy
I’m not gonna hurt you
I’m just gonna bash your fucking brains in

Now the fun has just begun
And one by one your wife and son
Hang in the web you’ve spun as family ties come undone
REDRUM!
The writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
So follow me
Cross out the words “do not disturb”
On the doors of depravity (and we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much enjoy your slay

An Identical scream from 217
Slashes to ashes
Dust to dust
Hey Danny…COME PLAY WITH US

The writing on my walls will tell you how it’s gonna be
Oh can’t you see (that we all scream):

Welcome to your last resort don’t Overlook the past
If you need help finding piece of mind don’t hesitate to axe
They can see the vacancy so say goodbye to sanity
We’re here to help you on your way
Thank you very much, and please do keep in touch

ENJOY YOUR SLAY!
