A Terrifying Vision of the Future Awaits in Neill Blomkamp’s First Short From Oats Studios
We’ve been talking a fair bit about Neill Blomkamp’s Oats Studios, the indie production company that plans on releasing short films via Steam that come with additional DLC files. It’s an interesting strategy that allows for Blomkamp and his team to generate revenue while also creating content that is clearly relevant to the gamer crowd. Plus, Steam boasts millions upon millions of active users, so the audience is there.
Last night, Oats Studios released their first short film in the form of Rakka. The basic concept is that Earth has been invaded by aliens that have managed to not only take over but begin terraforming the planet to suit their atmospheric needs. Life has become worse than hell for the remaining survivors and a few have managed to hide away and act as a sort of ragtag group of rebels. If they fail, Earth will be doomed.
While the film is free to watch, the additional assets are available for sale on Steam. These files include a downloadable video of the short with a 5.1 surround sound mix, concept art, scripts, and 3D models.
