But, really, what can brighten your day more than a glimpse at the end of the world? Like it or not, it’s coming. The signs have been in place for several years. Bush gets reelected. Lady Gaga is worshiped. Sarah Palin is taken seriously. Pia goes home on “American Idol”. It’s all going down, man!

Melancholia stars John Hurt, Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist), Kiefer Sutherland (Lost Boys, Mirrors), Charlotte Rampling (Angel Heart), Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood”), Stellan Skarsgard (Exorcist: The Beginning), and Udo Kier (Suspiria).

The film’s title refers to Planet Melancholia, an enormous planet that looms threateningly close to Earth. “No more happy endings!” commented Lars von Trier in an earlier story. He is directing from his own screenplay.

Check out the trailer for Melancholia, which has been dubbed “a beautiful movie about the end of the world”, below courtesy of the film’s official site.
