If you’re like me and found yourself addicted to the Mortal Kombat games growing up (as a button-smasher myself, I regularly owned my friends on the arcade version at our local pizza joint), then you owe a huge debt of gratitude to Ed Boon, one of the original creators of the Mortal Kombat gaming franchise.

Boon has continued his involvement with the series ever since its inception in 1992 and is now preparing the latest MK installment for release on April 19th. The brand new game not only heralds the return to 2D fighting but also gives a fresh spin on the storylines in the first three Mortal Kombat games released back in the 90s.

When he’s not busy preparing one of the most anticipated video game titles of this year, Boon has also stayed busy collaborating with director Kevin Tancharoen on the brand new web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which gives viewers a look into the origins of some of their favorite characters.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy stars Michael Jai White (Spawn), Jeri Ryan (“Star Trek: Voyager”), Darren Shahlavi (300), and Ian Anthony Dale (“The Event). Tancharoen collaborated with Boon and Aaron and Todd Helbing on the web series’ scripts. Mortal Kombat: Legacy is being released by Warner Bros. Digital Distribution exclusively in conjunction with gaming entertainment site Machinima.com.

Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to speak with Boon during the Mortal Kombat: Legacy press day, and he discussed how he got involved with Tancharoen’s web series after seeing his short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth randomly on the internet last year, shared his feelings on taking the storytelling of the MK universe in a new direction, and dished some details on the brand new Mortal Kombat game.

Check out our interview with Boon below, and make sure to watch the first episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy (directly under our interview) as well. Also, don’t forget to look for the brand new Mortal Kombat game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 when it hits shelves next week on April 19th.
