The first attempt at a “Supernatural” spinoff, the much maligned “Bloodlines,” was a dismal failure; but The CW has listened to the show’s fans and now has another potential series in the works: “Wayward Sisters,” starring Kim Rhodes as the beloved Sheriff Jody Mills.

Per Deadline, the project is being developed as a planted spinoff and will have a backdoor pilot airing as an episode of “Supernatural‘s” upcoming 13th season. However, so far neither the network nor the studio (Warner Bros. TV) has commented on the story.

If it moves forward, the spinoff will tell the tale of Sheriff Mills and a group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy. Under Mills’ training and protection, these women will emerge as a supreme monster-fighting force.

The spinoff hails from a quartet of “Supernatural” writers-producers:  showrunners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer as well as Phil Sgriccia and Robert Berens, all of whom will serve as exec producers.

Written by Berens and Dabb, “Wayward Sisters” is expected to also bring over other characters featured on the primary series as well as introduce new ones. Currently, Rhodes is the only actress attached, but talks with others appear to be in various stages. Based on the premise of the project, two existing “Supernatural” characters, orphan Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton) and runaway Annie (Alex) Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), who are under Jody’s care, would fit in nicely with Jody’s colleague and occasional partner, Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster), also a strong candidate.

Jody, Claire, Alex, and Donna have been the “dream quartet” of characters for a spinoff that fans have been rallying for. Named in part after the title of the Kansas song that opens every “Supernatural” finale, “Carry On Wayward Son,” the “Wayward Sisters” spinoff idea was the result of a grassroots fan effort that started two years ago, soon after “Bloodlines” did not go forward.

We should have more info soon so stay tuned!
