New York’s Quad Theater Hosting 21-Film Mario Bava Retrospective

New York’s Quad Cinema has announced that they will be hosting a 21-film Mario Bava retrospective that will include the US premieres of four 4k restoration titles! The retrospective will take place July 14th through the 25th but it will be preceded on July 7th with a 50th anniversary screening of the restoration cut of Kill, Baby…Kill!. Per the theater’s research, this is the first Bava retrospective in New York in 14 years!

From the official press release:
Over the course of more than two dozen features, Mario Bava’s distinctive style developed from baroque manipulation of chiaroscuro into spectacular use of color, with his reach extending into spy films, Westerns, sex comedies, and a series of benchmark horror films that laid the groundwork for the giallo and the modern slasher movie. A master stylist with a flair for lurid visuals, Bava’s imprint on contemporary cinema is incalculable: Fellini, Scorsese, Carpenter, Dante, del Toro, Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, Dario Argento—all were influenced by the so-called maestro of the macabre.

Films that will be screened include Baron Blood, Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace, Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs, A Hatchet for the Honeymoon, Lisa and the Devil, Planet of the Vampire, and many more. The 4K restoration films are Rabid Dogs, Roy Colt and Winchester Jack, Shock, and The Whip and the Body.

For more information, simply head to Quad Cimena’s official website to see all the films that will take place during this time as well as their run dates.

This week we're joined by Alex Henes and Matt Merenda, the filmmakers behind the yoga-horror found footage film Mind Body Spirit, which is available on demand and streaming on Shudder and AMC+. We chat about Sarah J. Bartholomew's fantastic performance, the script and more before diving into their childhoods and their very different reactions to horror as a kid. Then we chat about The Brave Little Toaster and how it destroyed all four of our childhoods. Anthropomorphic appliances, self-cannibalism, religion...this movie has it all and we laugh our way through describing just how messed up it actually is.
