American McGee Needs Our Help to Venture Out of the Woods

American McGee, the man who brought us American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns, has just launched a Kickstarter for a new project titled Out of the Woods, which is a blend of a card game, book of original stories, and a series of art prints, each a creative take on traditional fairy tales.

The card game seems to follow the basic concept of Red Riding Hood, with players competing against each other to be the, you guessed it, first one out of the woods. The last player left in the forest will be eaten by wolves.

The book was written in collaboration with R.J. Berg, the writer behind the Alice series. The stories included feature Bluebeard, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, 3 Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood, Little Mermaid, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and The Pied Piper.

Talking about these stories, McGee explains, “For the narrative theme, I’ve recently been thinking a lot about morality and behavioral development in a world less and less influenced by traditional cultural, religious, and societal pressures. I believe important life lessons must be passed to us by some method – religion, literature, caregivers, and/or painful experience. This was the original purpose of fairy-tales – to scare children (and adults) into acting morally and cautiously as they journeyed through life.

The posters are all based on the stories that book and card game relate to, each with a dark yet childlike quality about them. That being said, anyone who puts these pieces on the walls of their kids’ rooms is destined to give them nightmares for a long, long time!
