Exclusive: Stream Two Tracks From Benjamin Wallfisch’s Annabelle: Creation Score
Next Friday sees the wide release of Annabelle: Creation (review), the latest film in James Wan’s The Conjuring universe. We’ve been giving you tastes of the film with interviews, advance screenings, clips, and stills. Today, we want to give you a different taste of the film in the form of two tracks from the soundtrack, which we’re premiering below.
Composed by Benjamin Wallfisch (IT, A Cure For Wellness, the two tracks, “Creation” and “The Possession”, give a strong taste of the emotional range you’ll see in the film. There’s a sense of melancholic loss in the former, mixed with a sad beauty that turns sinister towards the end. The latter is an exercise in pure tension and terror from beginning to end. Everything about that track screams “Fear me!”
Wallfisch states, “It’s always a joy to collaborate with David F. Sandberg; not only is he of course a master filmmaker, but he’s also a great musician. His deep understanding of what a score can bring to the table in such a finely nuanced, beautifully crafted piece of cinema as Annabelle: Creation, gave me a lot of freedom to think outside the box.”
He further explains, “Our only rule was everything in the score had to be acoustic; as the drama is set in the 1950s, everything needed to feel authentic to the time. As a supplement to the large orchestra we used on the score, we utilized a whole bunch of dusty toy instruments from the 1950s, with one in particular appearing more than any other – a seemingly innocent sounding Jaymar toy piano. Just the kind of instrument you might catch Annabelle herself playing…”
The soundtrack to Annabelle: Creation comes out tomorrow, August 4th via WaterTower Music.
David F. Sandberg directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote Annabelle. The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija 2, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher, The Last Witch Hunter), and Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (“Without a Trace”) and Miranda Otto (“Homeland”, the Lord of the Rings trilogy).
Annabelle: Creation has been rated R by the MPAA for horror violence and terror. Slated for release August 11, 2017, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
