Interview With 7 From Etheria Director Karen Lam
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the mad mix of films encompassed within 7 From Etheria, you’re more than likely missing out on some sure-fire entertainment, including one particular short that I thought was one of the best of the bunch. It’s from director Karen Lam, who has been involved in the TV and film industry since 2000, and she was more than generous enough to give us a few minutes to discuss her entry into the film, as well as her inspirations and future projects, so settle in and enjoy!
DC: Can you give us a description of your short film that you’ve included into 7 From Etheria?
KL: STALLED is a short film about a man whose bad day turns tragic when a series of mistaken impressions escalates into full-out war. The script was written by actor David James Lewis, who stars as the man with the terrible day, and we worked together to make his day so much worse.
DC: What does it mean to you to have your film included alongside such talented female filmmakers?
KL: It’s a huge honor to be included in the collection: Stalled has toured with many of the films and I’ve loved meeting the other filmmakers, and seeing their work. Our industry only works when we support each other and I’m lucky to have such an incredible cohort.
DC: Who are some of the people whose work you admire, or draw inspiration from?
KL: As a child of the 80s, I was heavily influenced by music videos and Floria Sigismondi is one of my stylistic heroes. I’m thrilled to see that she’s one of the directors for the Handmaid’s Tale television series, and her episodes were dreamy and dangerous, which I can only aspire toward. My personal mentors include Rachel Talalay (“Tank Girl” “Doctor Who”) and Jen Lynch, and I’m lucky enough to count them as friends.
DC: Lastly, after the release of 7 From Etheria, what can your followers look forward to seeing from you in the future?
KL: Over the last two years, I’ve been writing more than directing, and was in the writing room of two SYFY series, specifically “Van Helsing” (season 1), and the upcoming “Ghost Wars” (starring Vincent d’Onofrio, Meatloaf and Kim Coates.) I’ve written a full episode this season – mine is the exorcism storyline, which I’m really excited about. I’m currently directing a documentary, which is still in the beginning stages so I’m not sure if it will be a feature or series at this point. Really excited to be back in the director’s chair!
