Venture Into the Horror of Junji Ito’s The Enigma of Amigara Fault
If you’ve never read any of Junji Ito’s manga, you’re doing yourself a disservice. His work never fails to leave me disturbed at a level that few others have reached. There’s something deeply unsettling that hovers over everything he does. His art is a macabre vision of body horror and warped reality while his stories spit in the face of humanity and our norms, ultimately weaving tales that are impossible to relate to and yet are impossible to untangle yourself from.
One of this stories, “The Enigma of Amigara Fault”, plays on themes of compulsion, yearning, and unavoidable need. It’s a story that has haunted me since the day I read it and I honestly believe that certain images will never escape my memory. If you can get your hands on a copy, it’s well worth the time of any horror fan.
My pal Ragnar has posted a wonderful video over on his YouTube channel that analyzes this story from a critical lens. As Ragnar puts it, “This video essay attempts to let the story come to life and investigates the psychological and sociological themes behind this eerie tale about a hole in a wall that’s been made for you whose beckoning you are physically unable to resist. Even if it kills you.”
