Blood Drive Star Colin Cunningham Joins Composer Michael Gatt for Episode 1.10 – Scar Tissue; Hear Two Exclusive Tracks!
Syfy’s “Blood Drive” is already up to Episode 1.10 this week; and in something a bit different for the show, one of the stars, Colin Cunningham (who plays Julian Slink), joined forces with composer Michael Gatt for the ep. We got our hands on a behind-the-scenes video of their collaboration plus two exclusive tracks.
Gatt describes the tracks he sent over as follows: “I’ve included one of the cues that Colin recorded on called ‘Streets of Cronenburgh’ as well a track called ‘Taste My Rainbow,’ which is from scenes with Aki (Marama Corlett) and Christopher (Thomas Dominique). Their scenes have been so fun to score for – I mean, ‘twisted’ love story is an understatement! That said, there is a tenderness and purity between them that I really wanted to play up in the music. As well, we hear some of the 8-bit sounds that I used to underscore Aki’s robot side.”
In addition, Gatt shared some insight into working with Cunningham (whom you might remember as Pope in “Falling Skies”), his favorite episode to score this season, and more so read on while you listen!
Q: What was the experience like having one of the actors of “Blood Drive” come in the studio and contribute to your score? How did this come about?
Michael Gatt: The show creators suggested Colin play on the score, and my first thought was that he should play Slink’s theme in scenes that feature Slink… after all, “Blood Drive” is so meta. As for the actual recording session, I was already a big fan of his work onscreen so it was great when he came in and just crushed it recording the parts. As you’ll see in the behind-the-scenes video, myself and everyone in the studio were just floored by his talent.
Q: “Blood Drive” has a lot of different vibes and styles musically. Can you tell us about what kind of musical vibe this episode has?
MG: At this point in the series, both the episodes and the corresponding scores have covered everything from horror to spaghetti western to classic kung fu, among many other genres. Episode 10 takes its own turn; there are cues that lean Persian, and others that are fully “worship” music. There is even a new theme for the town of Cronenburgh, which is only used in this episode. Last, but not least, we get to hear what happens when saxophone gets featured over the “blood-driven” guitars and synths that are the foundation of the show’s sound.
Q: What has been your favorite episode to score and why?
MG: It is very hard for me to name which episode was my favorite to score. Given the ever-changing nature of each episode, “Blood Drive” is a composer’s dream, getting to essentially score a new movie with each week! So each one is really precious. With that said, there is a personal journey that you take when scoring something of this scope. Thus, the season finale was very special in that respect; at that point seven hours of score had been already been created, and there was a simultaneous feeling of accomplishment while still wanting to push the boundaries of the score.
