Mike Flanagan took to Twitter today to reveal that his adaptation of Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game will be premiering on Netflix on September 29th. The film will be making its US premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest.

Speaking about the project on the Mick Garris Post Mortem podcast, Flanagan stated, “I was 19 years old when I read it for the first time,” said. I put it down and had gooseflesh all over my arms. It’s just an astonishing story. There were parts of the book I couldn’t continue reading… I had to put it aside because they were so upsetting. I remember when I put the book down, I thought, ‘It’s brilliant, but it’s unfilmable.’ When I first moved to Los Angeles, I would carry a hardback with me when I took general meetings. When anyone would ask me what my dream project was, I’d pull it out. It took me a couple of years to come up with a mechanism that would make it cinematic without changing the book.

Book synopsis:
Once again, Jessie Burlingame (Carla Gugino) has been talked into submitting to her husband, Gerald’s, kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood) crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences. Now Jessie is utterly trapped in an isolated lakeside house that has become her prison—and comes face-to-face with her deepest, darkest fears and memories. Her only company is that of the various voices filling her mind… as well as the shadows of nightfall that may conceal an imagined or very real threat right there with her…
