So you call yourself a fan of old school horror? This means your interest was piqued when you heard about the re-release of the 1989 Canadian bloodbath Things on DVD, July 12th. But Mondo Video has gone even further with turning back the hands of time. In conjunction with the DVD release, a VHS version of the film will be available.
That’s right, good ol’ VHS. Get Mr. Peabody and Sherman; we’re piling into the WABAC Machine with this one!
Trying to describe Things is a bit of a fool’s errand. This is a film you have to see to appreciate, as evidenced by the clip below. And think about the experience Mondo Video is offering here. When was the last time you were able to unwrap a brand new VHS tape, load it into your player (top-loading or otherwise) and watch a real 80’s gorefest. I’m sure it’s been a while.
From the Press Release
Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is pleased to announce a continued partnership with Intervision Picture Corporation – a video label dedicated to “vintage outsider cinema from a world all its own” – to release 1989’s Things on VHS. The first Canadian shot-on-Super 8 gore shocker commercially distributed on video, Things is the much anticipated follow-up to May’s sold-out run of Sledgehammer, the inaugural title from Mondo Video, a new VHS-only label created to release rare genre films in a collectible format. The VHS release will coincide with film’s debut on DVD from Intervision, which includes over four hours of bonus material including video testimonials from iconic horror auteur Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener and more.
“Things is the surreal saga of two friends who visit a remote cabin, only to discover a womb of monstrous horror that demands graphic dismemberment,” according to Intervision’s packaging. “It’s an inexplicable orgy of eye ripping, beer guzzling, boob baring, skull drilling, sandwich making, chain sawing, bad acting and post-sync dubbing.” Mondo Video’s THINGS includes the original poster art, vintage box copy from the 1989 VHS release and will be available for purchase only at MondoTees.com on Wednesday, July 13, 2011.
“Some will be repulsed. Others may be transformed forever. But you have never seen anything like this before,” says Intervision marketing director Evan Husney. “Things is the quintessential Canadian ‘homemade’ horror film, and beneath its oozing outsider façade lies a barrage of low-budget freakiness and transcendent surrealism, earning its place in the new Intervision/Mondo Video cult canon.” Mondo’s creative director says, “Mondo Video strives to only release things that YOU NEED TO SEE, and this low budget Canadian monster movie ranks at the top of that list!”
