Todd McFarlane announced from this year’s New York Comic Con that his hard-R Spawn film, which he has stated many times will be “dark”, will begin shooting this February. In the works for many, many years, McFarlane announced earlier this year that the film would be made with Blumhouse Productions and that it would mark his directorial debut.

Speaking from NYCC, McFarlane stated, “It’s going to be dark. I will have a shark in black water and if you’re swimming he will come and you’ll be gone and he will fuck you up.

The film will have a $10 million dollar budget and is locked into a first-look deal with Universal for distribution and marketing, although McFarlane is curious if that will actually happen.

The only things we need from them,” he explains, “are distribution and marketing. We don’t need your input, we don’t need your cash, we don’t need your creativity – and they don’t like those deals. They always want the budget to go up because then they have to put money in it and then they own it.

Blumhouse’s Jason Blum recently stated, “Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd’s unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film.

One of the things that McFarlane is excited about with him being director is that he will get to share daily updates to his Facebook page, so get ready to see a lot of really cool behind-the-scenes that films usually don’t release until they’re special features on a Blu-ray. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled open for these posts to bring you the very best!
