Batman: Gotham by Gaslight Gets an R Rating; New Trailer Released

Just as I predicted back in July, the animated feature Batman: Gotham by Gaslight has been given an R rating for “some violence.” This was confirmed on the MPAA’s official website and was also listed in a new trailer revealed by IGN.  This makes it the third R-rated animated DC animated movie and the fourth R-rated film to feature Batman overall when you include the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Based on the Elseworlds comic of the same name, Gotham by Gaslight takes place outside of the regular DC continuity, with a Victorian era version of the World’s Greatest Detective hunting down Jack the Ripper.

Bruce Greenwood, who recently appeared in Gerald’s Game and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, voices Batman in the film, making it his second appearance as the character after 2010’s Under the Red Hood. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Carpenter as Selina Kyle and Anthony Head as Alfred. Sam Liu, who has also been behind a ton of other animated DC films, directs.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight will be released by Warner Home Video next year. You can pre-order a digital copy here.
