Archie Comics’ Sabrina is Coming to Netflix
Netflix has just announced that they will be expanding the “Riverdale” universe on their own terms by ordering a two-season, 20-episode run of “Sabrina”, which is an adaptation of Archie Comics’ The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, per THR. The 20 episodes will be shot back-to-back throughout 2018 with production kicking off in February and ending in October.
The show was originally being developed at The CW to be a companion to their “Riverdale” series but it seems like Netflix offered a better way for the story to come to life. With the quality of their original programming already evident in shows like “Narcos” and “Stranger Things”, I can’t say I’m surprised.
“Sabrina” will take the character of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and thrust her deep into a world of witches, the occult, and other horrors, all centered around a coming-of-age storyline focusing on Sabrina’s own heritage. It sounds like people who enjoyed “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are going to find a lot to love here!
Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has written the script for Netflix and will act as an executive producer.
In a previous interview with THR, Aguirre-Sacasa stated, “One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000-5,000 characters. Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats … those are characters who can very easily support their own show.”
Maybe we’ll see Josie and the Pussycats join Sabrina for some horror investigations a lá Scooby Doo?
