Never let it be said that Hollywood doesn’t work fast. Even though its release is still a few weeks away, an American remake of the upcoming Colombian film El Paramo (The Squad) is already in the works.

According to Colombia Reports production company Rhayuela Cine received a number of offers from Los Angeles and New York based film companies for the U.S. rights to their latest film.

The eventual winner of the bidding war was Scott LaStaiti, executive producer of Love in the Time of Cholera and Turistas (which by the way is still not a corn chip snack).

LaStaiti said, “They did a great job with El Paramo. It’s a chilling film.” He added he would like to shoot the film in Colombia, but no final decision had been made on the matter.

Filmed at a real military base that stands at 14,000 feet above sea level, El Paramo depicts a special command unit of soldiers that are sent to investigate a mountaintop military base that has lost contact with headquarters. The nine soldiers go expecting to find evidence of an guerrilla attack, but the enemy they find is not what they thought it would be.

LaStaiti added, “[The film] doesn’t just look to get an immediate reaction from the audience; instead it invites reflection: The unknown and the enemy are the equivalent of each other and transform into symbols of the fear and paranoia of our times.

El Paramo will be released in Colombia on October 7th.
