Chris Columbus to Write and Direct Five Nights at Freddy’s Adaptation!
It was back in late March of 2017 that we last wrote about the film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s, which we reported was happening over at Blumhouse. Today, Deadline has reported that the adaptation is moving forward with none other than Home Alone‘s Chris Columbus attached to write, produce, and direct the feature! Game creator Scott Cawthon will be producing as well, alongside Blumhouse’s Jason Blum.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise has six titles and has become a viral sensation. A cursory search on YouTube shows that first page results amount to the hundreds of millions, so it’s not a stretch to say that there are billions of views centered on this title.
The premise of the games is simple: the player steps into the role of a security officer at a Chuck E. Cheese’s-esque establishment where the animatronic critters come to life and haunt the building at night. Your goal is simply to survive the night.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s film rights were originally at New Line but they were put in turnaround, allowing Blumhouse to snap up the rights with Cawthon’s blessing.
