The CW Prepping a Spin-Off of The Originals Featuring Hope and Alaric
With “The Vampire Diaries” having ended last year and “The Originals” set to depart at the end of its upcoming fifth season, we were beginning to think that, aside from “Supernatural,” The CW was putting all its eggs into the superhero basket… but with this latest news, we have hope (pun intended) that the network’s horror days aren’t about to end anytime soon.
Per Variety, a spin-off of “The Originals” is moving closer to reality as both Matt Davis (pictured right), aka Alaric Saltzman, and Danielle Rose Russell, aka Hope Mikaelson, are attached to star in the potential new series along with Quincy Fouse, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, and Aria Shahghasemi. What that means for Candice King’s Caroline Forbes character is not yet known.
The project is still in development and has not been ordered to series so we’ll keep our eyes open for updates. In the meantime, it’s worth noting that of the above newcomers, Aria Shahghasemi has been confirmed as appearing in Season 5 of “The Originals.”
The CW’s president, Mark Pedowitz, previously revealed during the 2017 Television Critics Association summer press tour that the network had preliminarily discussed a Hope-centric spin-off with “The Originals”/“The Vampire Diaries” creator Julie Plec: “There’s been many conversations about the character Hope,” Pedowitz said. “Nothing has come out of it yet. Julie really wants to get the final season of ‘The Originals’ done.”
“The Originals,” itself a spin-off of “The Vampire Diaries,” is set to return on April 20th. It follows Joseph Morgan’s Klaus Mikaelson and his family in New Orleans. Morgan stars alongside Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Yusuf Gatewood, and Riley Voelkel. Russell (pictured at the top of the page) will take over the role of Hope from Summer Fontana for the final season, which will take place after a time jump. Davis originated the role of Saltzman on “The Vampire Diaries” before making multiple appearances on “The Originals.”
Plec serves as executive producer with Leslie Morgenstein. The series hails from Bonanza Productions Inc., My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, and CBS Television Studios.
