Let’s Make Up a Sequel to A QUIET PLACE!

WARNING:

This article contains massive spoilers

This week we will see the Blu-ray home release of John Krasinski’s new horror-thriller A Quiet Place co-starring his wife Emily Blunt. I don’t know about you but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and that’s why my mind seems to automatically head towards “What could a sequel look like?”

After all, the film did make $50 million on opening weekend alone and currently holds a 95% price score over on Rotten Tomatoes. And do you think Platinum Dunes, the company behind remakes of such horror classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Amityville Horror is just going to sit on this hot horror property without exploiting it for a sequel? No, they will not. Not for long, at least.

The sad fact of the matter is that they will probably do so with or without the creative backing and involvement of director John Krasinski and star Emily Blunt. So what follows is not only my pitch for A Quiet Place 2 starring Emily Blunt and directed by John Krasinski but also my pitch for a Krasinski and Blunt-less sequel. Will it work? I think so.

First off let me just say that both versions of this pitch for a sequel – or multiple sequels if you think about it – heavily involve one aspect from the original film that I felt was purposefully left unexplored: the other survivors. Other survivors? Yes, for those who might not remember there’s a sequence in the film where Krasinski goes to the top of a silo at a specific time of the night and lights a fire. He then looks out across the horizon where other scattered fires (about 5 of them) start popping up. This to me, of course, seems to symbolize that they were other survivors out there and the sequel(s) would both heavily involve this aspect.

So let’s go ahead and start this off by going over the Krasinski and Blunt version. This version would begin with something that might be a bit controversial but stick with me here. The Krasinski-Blunt version would begin with the death of John Krasinski. Again, stick with me here. In the original film, we saw Krasinski sacrifice himself by allowing one of the sound creatures to attack him. But like I say about any character from any movie or TV show, “If we don’t see the brain destroyed the character could still be alive.”

Now before you go running off, let me just say that Krasinski isn’t going to survive his attack, only that immediately after the ending of the original film, where Blunt and her daughter figure out that the hearing aids can kill the creatures, they kill the other remaining creatures and then head off to try and find Krasinski’s body. However, when they find Krasinski’s body it’s revealed that he’s still alive. Thus giving all three (or four if you count the squishy baby) a moment to say goodbye to their husband/father. Battling and super-shotgun-killing the remaining creatures right off the bat and then finding Krasinski and having this emotional goodbye would be a great way to start off this new film. After all, the original movie’s opening 10 minutes were an intense emotional gut-punch and it only seems fitting Part 2 should carry the same weight.

Moving on, the plots of both versions that I’m pitching here basically become intertwined at this point in that the sequel would be about one of the above-mentioned survivor/neighbors – or better yet – the neighboring community, dealing with the threat. The only real difference is if Emily Blunt is a part of the story or not. If she is, then the plot is the remaining family going to the neighboring houses and helping out. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Why would Emily Blunt leave if she knows she can protect her children and especially her newborn baby from these creatures?” I think it was well established in the film that there other creatures in the world and it’s only a matter of time before they would fall on the farmhouse. So that’s one reason. Another is that I believe the original film put it out there that Emily Blunt wouldn’t be able to just sit by idly knowing that there are other survivors out there who could benefit greatly from this new information regarding how to brain-explode the sound creatures.

So, yeah, either way you cut it, the plot(s) of the sequel(s) revolve around a neighboring house and the family that lives there. Not to be a direct clone of the original film, I think the next film should introduce a family that has rallied around other groups of families in the area. All together they have established a way to transfer goods and services and live their lives to the best of their collective abilities. Depending on the version we’re talking about here, the original film’s family would integrate into this community to varying degrees. Best of all, there would be a character around the pre-teen girl’s age – and get this – he would be blind, thus making him a powerful weapon against the creatures themselves as he has (for lack of a better term) super hearing. And on top of that, this new community would see events from the first film take place (namely the fireworks display), and the old man and his dead wife in the woods bit from the first film would be explored a bit deeper in this next entry.

This sequel aside, one of the aspects that make for almost endless entries to the A Quiet Place series is the fact that the original film counts out the days since the initial invasion. This means film after film could explore what has happened before, after, and as mentioned above, during the events of the first film. Meaning if Krasinski ever wants to return to the series for a scene here and there – or a complete prequel – then he could do it, no problem.

In the end, when we were hit with the news that there is a sequel on the way for A Quiet Place, I wasn’t discouraged. This world still has plenty to discover and uncover. And hell, I haven’t even mentioned the part where we find out there are other types of these creatures around. After all, they seem to be pack hunters, with the lone three attacking Krasinski’s neck of the woods. But what about the other breeds that might be stalking other territories out in the vast quiet world. Oh, snap.

Do you think A Quiet Place 2 could work? How about without Blunt and Krasinski? Let us know what you think in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!
