Have a DEVILFISH of a Time This Summer Watching MONSTER SHARK on Blu-ray
Before Syfy and Roger Corman teamed up to bring us the cult favorite Sharktopus there was another cult flick about a half-shark/half-octopus mutation terrorizing the ocean and its title was the much less imaginative Monster Shark.
Or, the slightly more creative Devilfish, as it was better known to video store patrons in the States and to fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 when it was the featured film during, ironically, the show’s Sci-Fi Channel run.
With the blu-ray market becoming more and niche and the cult titles making their way sometimes even more niche it still might be a tad surprising to see something like Lamberto Bava’s schlocky US-Italian octo-Jaws offering Monster Shark get the royal upgrade. Then again, this is to be a Code Red release and unlikely B-movie titles is truly their niche.
Michael Sopkiw, Valentine Monnier, Gianni Garko, and William Berger star in Bava’s nature gone amok movie about a marine biologist, a dolphin trainer, a research scientist, and a local sheriff trying to hunt down a large sea monster, a shark/octopus hybrid, that is devouring swimmers and fishermen off a south Florida coast.
Code Red’s release will include a brand new remaster of the film with extensive color correction and a commentary track with star Michael Sopkiw. The case will boast reversible cover art featuring both titles of the film so you can decide for yourself which you prefer.
Not included on the disc: the notorious “MST3K” episode of Mike & the Bots roasting this octo-shark.
Monster Shark or Devilfish or “The Original Sharktopus” or whatever else you want to call it is scheduled to swim its way to to Blu-ray on July 3rd.
To think by Fourth of July this year we’ll have both Monster Shark and Piranha II: The Spawning available to us on Blu-ray. God bless America!
