And here it is! Straight out of Fantastic Fest … the first teaser trailer for Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End, and all we can say is that the end can’t get here soon enough! Really good stuff!
The film stars Angus Scrimm, Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, Doug Jones, Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Glynn Turman and Daniel Roebuck.
Synopsis
It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is under way, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.
UPDATE:
Our man at Fantastic Fest, Drew Tinnin, just wrote in with a brief description of a scene shown at the event. Dig it!
International programmer Todd Brown from Twitch Film brought Coscarelli up to the stage after a gushing introduction that reminded us what a master the underrated director really is. One of the only filmmakers able to say they created a bona fide horror franchise, Coscarelli looks to be pulling out all the stops in his first film since Bubba Ho-Tep in 2002.
After actor Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) joined the director onstage for some playful banter – Jones insisted Coscarelli was now among the top seven directors he has worked with – we were shown a full scene featuring Jones and Rob Mayes, who plays the titular character, John. Jones’ character, Roger North, appears in the back seat of John’s SUV and suddenly hurls a squirming alien slug into the top of John’s shirt. The slimy creature thrashes its way into John’s clothing with just the tail left to wiggle about as John swerves and struggles to regain some control and composure in order to process what’s going on.
As Roger North’s small companion gets comfortable, the otherworldly North begins pontificating on the insignificance of humans and the randomness of life – but he does so with an eerie sense of compassion. Just as he proved in Larry Fessenden’s Fear Itself episode “Skin and Bones”, Jones establishes himself in this scene as an actor that doesn’t need a rubber suit to have screen presence.
As John is told to just keep driving, he finally snaps out of his paralysis, grabbing the creature – still nestled in his chest – revealing the sharp rows of teeth on its face as it prepares to bite. John thwarts the attack, throwing the creature out the window. He suddenly has a gun to Frost’s head. “Do you know what this is?” Frost does. John then says something like, “Do you know when we pull the trigger it makes our dick hard?” The scene ends with John squashing the creature with his boot in the middle of the road.
What followed was the teaser trailer that was released today and can be seen below. Paul Giamatti looks as good as always, odd creatures abound, and a powerful drug is introduced that can apparently make its users see the future. John Dies at the End is based on David Wong’s book of the same name and should hit theaters early next year.
