GODZILLA: CITY ON THE EDGE OF BATTLE Anime Film Opening In Japan This Month
With a Japanese box office gross of just over $3 million, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters may not have been the box office champion that Toho were probably hoping for, but either way, they have not been deterred from their original plan for it to be the first in a trilogy. The second film, which will be called Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, opens in cinemas across Japan on May 18, and judging from the trailer below, it will feature a lot more of the actual Godzilla, as opposed to its predecessor, which mostly starred his offspring.
City on the Edge of Battle (spoiler alert) will kick off where Planet of the Monsters left off, with Haruo Sakaki being rescued by a small colony of humans who remained on Earth despite the planet being overrun by giant monsters, which caused most of the other inhabitants to flee off-world. As you can see from the theatrical poster, Mechagodzilla, who is hugely popular right now due to his major role in the climate battle of Spielberg’s Ready Player One, will also be making an appearance. As part of the film’s marketing campaign, Toho also teamed up with Universal to create a poster featuring both Godzilla and the Jaegers from Pacific Rim. Drawn by artist Hidetaka Tenjin, this is probably the closest we are ever going to get to an actual Godzilla/Pacific Rim crossover, so it is probably worth celebrating.
Directors Kōbun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi are all returning from the last film, whilst Mamoru Miyano will reprise his role as Sakaki. Other cast members will include Takahiro Sakurai, Kana Hanazawa, Tomokazu Sugita, Yuki Kaji, and Junichi Suwabe. After it releases in Japan this month, we can expect Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle to begin streaming on Netflix later in the year.
