Horror Heatwave: Dread Central’s 31-Day Movie Challenge for July 2018!

For many horror fans, Halloween isn’t simply a season or an annual celebration: It’s a way of life. As such, it seems a shame to wait until October to begin some traditional festivities.

Every year, websites, magazines, and TV networks unfurl 31-Day Horror Challenges; they’re a way to communally enjoy the horror genre while passing the hours until October 31st (usually culminating with John Carpenter’s Halloween on Halloween). Well, we’re liberating the 31-Day Horror Challenge from the month October. In fact, we’ve decided to create movie-watching challenges for every month of the year!

The idea is to create unique and inspiring curriculums for the truly devoted; we’ll be incorporating each month’s most anticipated genre releases along with gems that fit a specific theme. Since July is “Horror Heatwave” month at Dread Central, many selections featured in our inaugural monthly Horror Challenge have summer, desert, and vacation themes.

Of course, each challenge will also contain random entries rattled out of the brains of Dread Central’s stable of writers.

Are you a horror fan who lives every day like it’s Halloween? Do you have the gumption and the stamina to consume a new horror movie every day of every month? If so, feast your eyes on our 31-Day Horror Challenge for July below. Let us know you’re joining in the festivities by using #MonthOfDread on your social accounts when you watch these movies! Good luck and pleasant screams!

Click images (separated by week) to enlarge, download, and print; you can also see a complete list of films in July’s 31-Day Horror Challenge at the bottom of the article. Enjoy!

Episode 268: Mind Body Spirit Filmmkers Alex Henes and Matt Merenda and The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
This week we're joined by Alex Henes and Matt Merenda, the filmmakers behind the yoga-horror found footage film Mind Body Spirit, which is available on demand and streaming on Shudder and AMC+. Then we chat about The Brave Little Toaster and how it destroyed all four of our childhoods. Anthropomorphic appliances, self-cannibalism, religion...this movie has it all and we laugh our way through describing just how messed up it actually is. Episode 267: The Legendary John Harrison and The Haunting (1963)
This week we chat with filmmaker, producer, composer, writer, author...this guy's done it all...John Harrison. From working with George Romero on everything from Creepshow and Dawn of the Dead to Tales from the Darkside to the Dune miniseries to his Netflix series Residue...he's done it all. He even directed Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, which was Andrew LaSane's Scarred for Life pick, which is one of Terry's favorite movies. We chat about his long history in cinema; about how he started working with Romero to some insights into Tales from the Darkside. And we discuss his latest work, the novel Residue: Paramentals Rising, which is a sequel to the Netflix show. After learning about his horror history--including a memorable viewing of Night of the Living Dead--we find out why The Haunting terrified him as a twelve year old. John references an article written by Anthony McKay in Little Shoppe of Horrors, which can be ordered here.
