Gunship Announce New Album: Release Video Feat. THE LOST BOYS’ Sexy Sax Man Tim Cappello
When it comes to the recent resurgence of outrun/synthwave music, there are a few groups that stand head and shoulders above the rest, not only embodying the tones and passion of the 80’s but the ambience and magic of that decade. One such group is UK’s Gunship, whose 2015 self-titled album was critically acclaimed and catapulted the band to the forefront of the movement. Today, fans who have been desperate for new music can jump for joy as the band has announced a new album titled Dark All Day (out October 5) and has also released a video for the title track.
The song features vocals and an appearance by UK singer/songwriter Indiana. Almost entirely animated (stick to the end), the video packs in a vast amount of horror references with nods to titles like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade, Mad Max, Predator, From Dusk Till Dawn and, most obviously, The Lost Boys. In fact, that last one plays a huge part in this video and song as the 1987 film’s sexy sax man Tim Cappello reprises his role.
Cappello states, “Gunship’s track ‘Dark All Day’ is one of the funkiest tracks I’ve ever played on. The groove is brooding and dark but there’s so much passion & power to it, it moves so well, I couldn’t stop dancing while I was playing on it. And going doubletime during the choruses, pure genius. The guest singer, Indiana, has so much personality, her voice is so perfect for this, I think she’s AMAZING! It was so much fun to reprise my role in The Lost Boys, 30 years later, I kinda felt like a kid again, the hips are holding up.”
A personal note here: I’ve had this song on loop for the last 30 minutes and I see no signs of stopping. Gunship have created something dark, mysterious, sexy, and alluring. It’s clear that the group has managed to catch lightning in a bottle twice and that’s even without hearing the rest of the album. As a huge fan of their self-titled album, Dark All Day has quickly shot up to my most anticipated album of the year.
Dark All Day will feature a guest appearance from Kat Von D while Wil Wheaton will appear on “When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies”. UK artist Una Healy also guests while Altered Carbon‘s Richard K. Morgan provides a voice-over on “Woken Furies”.
Pre-orders for Dark All Day start today. There will be two special editions: a deluxe limited edition 180g double-gatefold 45 rpm vinyl set with special lenticular cover and a brand new Special Edition ‘16-Bit Box Set’ which includes signed CD and a plethora of new Gunship goodies. Editor’s note: the headline’s “Sexy Sax Man” is a reference to Tim Cappello’s character in The Lost Boys and is not a reference to Sergio Flores, aka “Sexy Sax Man”. You can learn more about that smooth sexiness right here.
