Darren Lynn Bousman’s THEATRE MACABRE

After last year’s immersive theater experience turned heads and delighted audiences, Darren Lynn Bousman is back to terrify Los Angeles yet again with Theatre Macabre! Running October 4 through November 4, the event will take viewers into the dark past of theater “…while simultaneously experiencing the most cutting-edge breakthroughs of today’s immersive entertainment leaders.”

Created by Bousman along with Clint Sears and Gordon Bijelonic, Theatre Macabre is an immersive experience that comes with some sinister warnings. For example, “No cell phones, hand bags, purses, backpacks or priggish social mores will be allowed. You should be wholly prepared to lose whatever it is that you bring inside our walls.” And when asked if this is a handicap accessible event, they explain, “Due to the unique nature of the experience, everyone’s path is different but there are moments that may require you to run, crawl, and navigate through tight spaces.”

As the loud, bombastic revelry of an audience all too desperate to lose themselves within the theatre’s ample amusements and carnal delights rings out all around you, you find yourself lost in thought. A warm spotlight falls upon your face and a previously unnoticed woman has turned to you and removed her heavy veil. Stark features over-exaggerated by makeup applied to be seen from the back row somehow manage to make her eyes burrow into your soul even harder. The crowd quiets. You can hear your own heavy breathing and suspect that everyone else can as well. A lilting but commanding voice that is as much a warning as a possible siren’s call to a new way of being calls out, “Why have you come here?”

Tickets for the event can be purchased through Eventbrite.
