New Showrunner Explains Meaning Behind New THE WALKING DEAD Title Card
When The Walking Dead returns to AMC in exactly one month, a lot will be different. For starters, it’ll take place 18 months after the conclusion of the “All Out War” story-arch that concluded in Season 8. Negan has been taken down a few pegs, and a tentative peace presides over a collective of once-divided communities. Of course, anyone who’s seen the 5-minute Season 9 Comic-Con trailer knows the good times won’t last!
The upcoming season will be one of big changes; both Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie Greene/Rhee (played by Lauren Cohan) will be leaving the series. There are also big changes happening behind the scenes, as longtime showrunner Scott M. Gimple has passed the torch to Angela Kang. A perfect (literal) illustration of these changes can be seen in the new logo/title card for The Walking Dead, which has been updated for the first time since the series launched.
No longer are the letters crumbling and decayed; rather, they’re constructed out of solid stone with patches of vibrant moss. Cracks, however, make it clear that everything is not 100% peachy-keen. CinemaBlend caught up with Kang who explained the meaning behind the logo’s new look.
“In previous seasons, the logo in the main titles was gradually decaying along with the world and the zombies in the show. The solid stone letters overgrown with greenery in the season 9 logo reflects the fact that we’re jumping into a new chapter of the story where our characters are rebuilding and nature is thriving — for better and worse.”
Synopsis:
Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, this gritty drama portrays life in the months and years that follow a zombie apocalypse. Led by former police officer Rick Grimes, his family and a group of other survivors find themselves constantly on the move in search of a safe and secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and Rick discovers that the overwhelming fear of the survivors can be more deadly than the zombies walking among them.
