VAMPIRE HUNTER D Comes Alive in Fan Film ARMY OF ME
Fans of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s Vampire Hunter D series have been blessed with dozens of novelizations about the titular character, as well as two anime features, and a PlayStation video game. But one area where the Dhampir has not ventured is in a live-action adaptation…until today.
Vampire Hunter D: Army of Me is a fanmade short film directed by Mandy Daigle and shot over four seasons in Idaho. In it, D happens across a wanderer in the middle of a desert and the two must team up to face a ghoul who uses illusions to his advantage. Well, that and the help of two big fellas that want to slice and dice everything in their path.
Almost entirely without dialogue – D’s left hand always has to make a quip or two – the short relies upon the music of Iceland’s Björk. A bit jarring when it comes to the editing and somewhat confusing in terms of the story, the short still has incredible costumes and looks professional. The fact that they also had to wait a year so as to get actual shots of the various seasons is a testament to their remarkable dedication. Say whatever you want to say about the short, these filmmakers put a lot of heart and soul into their work.
